High school students have classes, homework, activities, jobs, and lives outside of all of it. Finding time for tutoring is a commitment. We believe that time should be well spent.
Since 2007, Test Prep Wizards has built preparation around the student: what they understand, where they’re getting stuck, and which changes could make the biggest difference.
A different kind of tutoring company. By design.
Our founder, Vinny Madera, began tutoring in college and continued with a national tutoring company after graduation. He advanced quickly, eventually becoming one of just three tutors on the East Coast to hold a specialized role serving the company’s highest-tier clients.
But that success raised a question: what would tutoring look like if he could build the approach himself?
Vinny wanted closer relationships with families and more freedom to shape instruction around each student. His background in statistics gave him a way to do that.
He founded Test Prep Wizards in 2007.
A statistics degree put to very practical use.
Vinny began analyzing what appeared on the SAT and ACT, how frequently it appeared, and how patterns changed across difficulty levels. That work helped him decide what deserved instructional time and develop the curriculum used at Test Prep Wizards.
The purpose was practical: make informed choices about what to teach, how to teach it, and where a student’s effort could have the greatest impact.
That remains central to our approach. Performance data helps us find patterns. Conversations with students help us understand them. Together, they guide what we work on next.
We take their time seriously.
We may only see a student for an hour a week. That makes focus essential.
We identify a manageable set of priorities, connect instruction to purposeful practice, and check whether the work is helping. As the student progresses, the plan changes with them.
Students bring the effort. We bring the experience, attention, and a clear reason for what we’re asking them to do.
Knowing the subject is the starting point. Connecting with the student is essential.
It’s possible to know a subject inside out and still struggle to help someone learn it. When we choose tutors, we look for people who can build a relationship with the student sitting across from them.
Our guiding belief is simple: students need to know you care before they care how much you know.
We want tutors who take an interest, earn trust, and become people students feel comfortable asking for help. People who can be role models, recognize frustration, and hold students accountable with kindness.
Subject expertise matters. So does having someone in your corner who wants you to succeed.
